Getting the Most from Your Collections

Start here: An Introduction to Collections

Follow Other Collections

With hundreds of new programs being added to SpokenWord.org every day, how are you going to decide what to watch or listen to? A great way is to find other SpokenWord.org members who find and collect great programs and follow them. When you click on the Follow button associated with a collection, all new programs added to that collection by its owner are automatically added to your collection. Just find another member who has the same interests as you do and let him or her act as one of your personal curators.

If you click on the +All button for a collection, all of the programs currently in that collection will immediately be added ro your collection.

Subscribe to Feeds

The vast majority of programs in the SpokenWord.org database come from external RSS feeds submitted by our members. While you could subscribe directly to those feeds using iTunes, etc., most members find it's better to subscribe to the feeds using SpokenWord.org.

When you find a feed on SpokenWord.org, click on its Subscribe button. All new programs added to that feed by its creator will automatically be added to your collection.

If you click on the +All button for a feed, all previously received programs from that feed will immediately be added ro your collection.

Adding Your Own Feeds

The vast majority of programs in the SpokenWord.org database come from external RSS feeds submitted by our members. While you could subscribe directly to those feeds using iTunes, etc., most members find it's better to subscribe to the feeds using SpokenWord.org.

When you find a feed on SpokenWord.org, click on its Subscribe button. All new programs added to that feed by its creator will automatically be added to your collection.

If you click on the +All button for a feed, all previously received programs from that feed will immediately be added to your collection.

Editing Your Collections

Start by clicking on the [edit/tag] link for the collection you want to edit. This will give you four choices:

  • The Info tab allows you to edit the title and description of your collection and to assign tags and categories.
  • The Programs tab is where you change the order of programs and remove those you're finished with.
  • The Other Collections tab shows the collections that are followed by this one.
  • The External Feeds tab lists feeds subscribed to by your collection.

Organizing Your Collection and Removing Programs

Click on the [edit/tag] link for your collection, then the Programs tab. To change the order of programs in your collection, just click and drag them up or down. To remove a program, click on the "X" to the right of the program's title. Don't forget to Save button when you're done.

Append or Prepend New Programs?

Normally, SpokenWord.org adds new programs to the top of your collections. This is because most members subscribe to their collections's RSS feeds and expect them to be in reverse-chronological order like blogs. You can change this behavior so that SpokenWord.org instead adds new programs at the bottom of your collections by clicking on the Edit Profile link and setting the button labeled "Add new programs to my collections" at the bottom."

Your History

SpokenWord.org keeps track of every program you collect. In fact, your History is just another collection. You can see your History at any time by going to your My SpokenWord page, and clicking on the [history] link as shown on the right.

Why do we do this? Two reasons:

  • We hope you'll occasionally visit your History and rate programs you've heard by clicking on the stars.
  • By studying what programs you've collected, we can do a better job of recommending other programs.

If you don't want us to maintain a history of what programs you collect, go to your Edit Profile page and un-check the "Record collecting history" box. You can also delete the content of your History by clicking on the link on the same page.
